Walter Joseph Buell

2/13/25

Walter Joseph Buell, 90, died peacefully on 2/13/2025 at his home in Kirkville surrounded by family. He lived a full life and loved his family immensely. Walt taught for most of his career at Westhill High School where he had a heart for the “B” students. He was a great encourager of the underdog. It’s a testament to him that former students still kept in touch until his passing.

As for his grandkids, class was always in session. He would regale them with stories of his past growing up in Fulton or drop pearls of wisdom on them about life, often unsolicited. His “Papa- isms” will live on, and he will truly be missed.

Walter is survived by his wife, Bernie; children Scott (Diane) and Tracey McCarthy (Dennis); grandchildren Brennan, Elyce, Colby (Jordan), Graham, Reggie, and Shay. Walter was a proud industrial arts alumnus of SUNY Oswego. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift in his memory to SUNY Oswego's Department of Technology Memorial Fund at alumni.oswego.edu/givenow

A celebration of life will be scheduled at a future date. To send condolences, visit: robertdgrayfuneralhome.com.

My condolences to family. Mr. Buell was a good man, still remember the old light green pickup he drove. A while back i stopped out to Skaneateles to visit, but was told by a neighbor he wasn't there. Thank you for the teck drawing class, learned a lot from you. Mr. Buell was Instrumental in starting my company which flourishes to this day.

Standing outside his door welcoming us as we passed by Mr. Buell always seemed to be "watching" over us students with the same look as in his photo, one I never understood until many years later. A "Good" ancestor.
